What: The goal is the same for all players, but they decide how they will reach this goal.
Why: You give them autonomy by deciding how they will perform the drill, they will be more focused during the drill.
Motivational line: “The players are more focused and confident because they could choose their own way of working”.
Materials needed
Three cones, in different colors, each corresponding to a different option, placed along the field. For example:
Red = Slow and accurate
Yellow = On a high pace
Blue = Facing forward (not looking at the ball)
You can place a sticky note/masking tape with these options on the cones to make it extra clear what each cone represents.
Preparation
Prepare a drill (i) that the players already know well, not too complicated.
The goal of the exercise is the same for each player. Think of three ways in which the players can execute the drill.
(i) example exercise:
A technical drill in which the players improve their ball control. They dribble from one side of the field to the other (this is the goal), for example slaloming around cones. They decide HOW they will perform this task. For example:
Slow and accurate
On a high pace
Facing forward (not looking at the ball)
Let’s do it!
Explain the drill, and the goal of the drill.
Give the players three options for how they want to work on this goal. For example, but depending on the drill:
Slow and accurate
On a high pace
Facing forward (not looking at the ball)
The players show their choice by standing by the corresponding cone.
Then the drill can start.
